Updating Windows Software
How-To Update
Your Windows Software…For Free
Note: Try "Microsoft Update" if you use MS Office. Not only can you update Windows, but also your Office programs.By now all
those messages about “illegal operations” and various other “error
messages” have probably annoyed you. You may even be
scratching your head wondering what
you
did wrong.
The answer may be
you
never updated
your Operating System Software (that’s Windows).
There are many
upgrades and patches available. Installing them will help get rid of most of
those error messages, make your PC run better, and eliminate many of those
security holes you’ve probably heard about, which is how many
Trojan horses
& virus
access your system by the way. It Here’s how… Click
Start,
Click Windows Update or in your browser Address window
type http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/
or click this sample link. Click
Scan for
updates
This may look
different to some of you who have done this before. It is…Microsoft unified
the update site so no matter which version of Windows 9.x through Windows XP
they all look & work pretty much the same, finally eliminating most of the
confusion for users of different versions of Windows. After clicking
Scan for
updates
you should see a screen much like the next one below. Note the left
side of that screen. There are 3 classes of
Critical Updates &
Service Packs,
Windows
(in this example it is
XP), and
Drivers.
If you have updates
Critical Updates &
Service Packs
and then click
Review and Install Updates. Don’t
forget to temporarily
Disable
your
Virus protection
until after
the updates have finished installing. This should be the only instance that you
should disable virus protection. If you only see 1
class of update available, simply click
Review and install updates
on the
right side of the screen & proceed following any further prompts. After
finishing, re-start your computer to finish the updates.
My own
personal preference is to disable the Automatic update features in both
Windows
as well as
Virus protection. By assuming the responsibility of manual
updates, I never have any problem with the automatic
causing
crashes) or incomplete updates that you
thought
were done.
Some people trust the automatic processes…I don’t.
Scroll through
the list on the right side and select the
Add
button of each item you
want (unless it is grayed out like above). Click
Review
and install updates
to start Accept the EULA
(end user license agreement), after reading it of course. Now sit back and
watch the show.
Visit this site
every week or so to check for additional free downloads. Now your computer
will love you for the special attention and most of those programs will start
behaving instead of crashing in the middle of something important. Remember: We are available
to do this for you, at a
reasonable service charge, if you would rather NOT
attempt this yourself
